Our Facilities and Technologies
The International Center for Spinal Cord Injury employs highly skilled Physical and Occupational Therapists and support staff that specializes in the treatment of individuals with spinal cord injuries utilizing an activity based restorative therapies (ABRT).The treatment of pediatric inpatient and adult and pediatric outpatient populations occur in a state of the art center equipped with multiple technologically advanced rehabilitative instruments designed to facilitate optimal delivery of the most appropriate rehabilitative interventions. ABRT is customized to each client and delivered under the supervision of highly skilled therapists utilizing different rehabilitative instruments like:
- RT 300 upper and lower extremities ergometer which provides electrical stimulation to the muscles of the lower or upper limbs in a set pattern to allow the client to power the bicycle under their own strength. This activity improves muscle bulk, muscle strength and improves cardiovascular health.
- Standing gliders which allow the client to stand and work on trunk balance while performing reciprocal motions with the upper and lower extremities. The standing glider promotes weight bearing through the lower extremities and improves cardiovascular endurance.
- Partial weight supported gait training system. This piece of equipment allows the client to relearn walking by supporting some or all of the client’s weight while the therapists are moving the lower limbs over a treadmill through the proper gait pattern.
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulators used by therapists on specific muscle groups to promote grasp-release training of the hands and trunk and lower extremities movement.
The activity based restorative therapies occur is a busy place where clients of all ages receive rehabilitation, have fun work hard and improve their lives.
Aquatic Therapy Pools
Aquatic therapy uses water as a therapeutic environment. Water functions as a natural, low-impact exercise environment that requires effort proportionate to the speed of motion. Patients of all functional levels are able to participate in this therapy.
Staffed by therapists certified in advanced aquatic techniques, the three pools provide a range of temperatures and treatment options. One, the Hydrotrack, has an in-built treadmill specifically to retrain patients in walking. Of the other two pools, made by Hydroworx, one also has a treadmill and can accomodate therapists to assist patients in the pool with their gait pattern. The floors of both pools actually can be moved up or down using remote control. The pools include video systems for monitoring therapy activities, sensory temperature controls to accommodate care needs, and hydraulic lifts that allow the floors to be raised and lowered for easy access by patients in wheelchairs.
